It's set to be a busy few days across Wigan and Leigh as England continue their World Cup campaign.

With the England v Mexico fixture kicking off at 1:00am on Monday 6 July 2026, many pubs, bars and licensed venues are expected to remain open into the early hours following the Government's extension of licensing hours. Combined with the warm weather and increased footfall across town centres and the night-time economy, venues are likely to be extremely busy throughout the weekend.

While major sporting events create a fantastic atmosphere and bring communities together, they can also lead to increased demand on venues, transport services and emergency services. Taking a few simple steps can help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.

🚫 Violence Against Women and Girls

Unfortunately, incidents of harassment, unwanted attention and violence against women and girls can increase during major sporting events.

Everyone has a responsibility to challenge unacceptable behaviour.

Respect personal boundaries at all times

Harassment and intimidation will not be tolerated

Challenge inappropriate behaviour where safe to do so

Report concerns to venue staff or police

If you feel unsafe, seek help immediately. You will be listened to and supported.

Simple precautions can prevent serious harm.

Never leave your drink unattended

Only accept drinks you have seen being prepared

Keep your drink with you at all times

If something doesn't feel right, don't take the risk – get a new drink and seek assistance

As many venues may remain open until the early hours, planning ahead is more important than ever.

Arrange transport before you go out

Use licensed taxis or trusted transport providers

Stay in well-lit and populated areas

Avoid walking home alone where possible
